Kvesti's Lair:

I am fan of movies and music. I make Youtube videos and music to them. I try to get better on making videos and some day being good enough on making music releasing an album would make sense.

Day after you change strings to your guitar

January 26, 2020 in Text

This goes really geeky on guitars. Being geeky about music has been theme of this weekend. I will post couple videos of other geeky music thing I learned earlier this weekend next week. These videos convince me I need to change to 009-.042 strings. Just changed new set of .010-.046 to one of my guitars yesterday because that was the set it came with. I have light touch so .009 set should work better for me. .008 set might be too much but I am curious about .009 set. Next set will be .009 set.

Before you say I should have watched the video when it was published I say I bought the string set day before video was published. I have nothing more to say here. Check the videos if you are into this short of thing.

SHISHAMO「君の大事にしてるもの」

January 26, 2020 in Text

Last post I told three albums on my shopping list will be released on same day next week. Shishamo’s next album will be one of them. Shishamo is closer to normal rock band mold than Tricot. I might have forgotten Shashamo if I had not seen this video. They are quite standard three member rock group with punkish flavor.

So what makes this stand out. It is the arrangement and use of small elements. Drummer is playing percussion. Guitarist singer is doing her thing. Check what their bassist is doing without her bass. She is elevating the song with cheap instruments everyone can get their hands on. The guitar is probably quite expensive but everything else they use is pretty cheap. Another thing is how they use dynamics with this setup. They leave room when song needs it.

Their music has these elements but electric instrument don’t give this much dynamics. With acoustic instruments elements get more room.

Best thing at the moment: Tricot

January 24, 2020 in Text

Founding Facebook group for Japanese music turned out to be quite expensive. My album shopping list have many new bands which you will hear more about here in future. I don’t think I found Tricot from there. It was Youtube recommendations which thought I would like them based on videos I found from the group. This is their first song I heard. It was interesting at first. Felt like needs more listening. When I watched other videos their style started to open. Before watching this video I had bit of overdose of female lead Japanese rock bands. It felt like every band had two guitars which were Fenders or copies of Fender and bass which was Fender or copy of Fender. Just like Tricot.

What makes Tricot different is how they use those instruments. It is the guitarist and how rest of the music works with her playing. I wouldn’t be surprised if their songs start from those guitar parts. Style might take little time to get used to listen but it is worth it. I can’t help but wonder why her Stratocaster is missing bridge pickup. Usually the bridge pickup is the one to use and other ones give more mellow tones if you want them. But she obviously knows what she is doing.

Tricot is releasing new album next week. Same day as couple other albums on my shopping list are released. This song will be on that album.

Few words of Endymion

January 22, 2020 in Text

I made best thing at the moment post for Hyperion books. Now I have to say it only applies to first two book. Ones which have Hyperion in name. I managed to get to end of third book Endymion. It is not on level of first two books mainly for one big reason. I won’t go into spoilers. The problem was introduced right at the beginning of the book.

Endymion happens 274 years after events of Hyperion books. World is quite different after what happened in Hyperion books but it feels like natural development. You don’t need to read Hyperion books before this one. But you should because they are better. Series seem to reinvent itself for each books. Like in Millennium tv series it works for first two books but third is bit disappointing after two really good books. Based on how this book ended there might not be reinventing on next one. I hope there is because it needs it.

The problem. Endymion is mostly flashback. I know so is Hyperion. Difference is Hyperion had many short stories told as flashbacks. Each was short enough, different enough and interesting enough. While most of the book is flashback they were moving towards something interesting whole time. It is not only flashbacks. Something is happening in real time. In the end Hyperion is just long prologue to The Fall of Hyperion.

Endymion tries to repeat this. Problem is it tells too much at the beginning. Whole book is guy sitting in cell waiting for execution and telling his story. He tells at the beginning where heroes ended up before this moment. This could have worked if it served some sort of mystery. It doesn’t. The story is adventure where heroes barely escape their hunters. This is not a spoiler because it is told right at the beginning they will survive and do great things. That is the problem. Book is written like we should fear for our heroes when it tells right at the beginning they will make it. Book tries really hard to make it look like they won’t survive. It is in vain. We know they will make it. Only question is how they will make it. It is not that interesting.

I would have liked the book better if everything happening in cell was removed and this was told as it happened. Story is told from perspectives of the hunter and the hunted. Sometimes Hunter’s perspective is told first trying to convince something bad happened to Hunted. Then we get Hunted’s perspective showing how heroes made it. This was well written but book already told at the beginning they will make it.

It is not problem on first third but then the hunt starts to drag on. First third is good. It introduces the characters and world. Escaping is still interesting because we learn something all the time. After first third story becomes adventure with narrow escapes. I didn’t care how narrowly they escaped. I knew they will make it. Most of between first third and last tenth felt filler. I had to have long break and then force myself to listen the rest of the book. I didn’t have this problem with Hyperion books. I continued to The Fall of Hyperion right after Hyperion. Now I don’t feel like continuing to next one without a break. I might listen something shorter before getting in to last book of the series.

Introducing the Behringer 2600

January 20, 2020 in Text

I am pretty sure I have one of those by the end of the year if Behringer can make enough of them by then. Korg raised interest for ARP 2600 clones and Behringer comes with their version to pick up the fruits. This looks exactly like 2600 I want. It has everything I want and nothing I don’t want. I don’t need speakers or keyboard. I have headphones and speakers. I can control it with midi controllers I already have or with DAW which is what I do when I do music with my gear.

My only reservation was if it has audio in like the original. It does. When Korg released expensive version with as close to original as possible Behringer releases modern version which sounds like original but has modern improvements. This is better for someone who buy synths to use them.

Now the question is will Korg bring their ARP 2600 mini or do they give up. It will be closer to original and have features this doesn’t but how many wants it instead of this one.

MYRKUR - Ella

January 20, 2020 in Text

One of my favorite artists is releasing new album later this year. Myrkur is one of those artists who can make any kind of music and I like it. Her next album will be folk music. Might sound like quite departure from black metal she is known for. But it worked when she had acoustic tour some time ago. I didn’t know it was acoustic live when I went to see her. I wasn’t disappointed when I walked out of the venue. It will be interesting to see how well album of acoustic music will work. I expect it to be on my best albums of 2020 list. This first song sounds quite good.
