Best thing at the moment

Music favorites of July 2021

We didn’t have Bandcamp Friday this month but it didn’t stop me from buying new music. I bought rest of Den Sorte Død’s discography but because it is hard to find videos for their songs and I already put one on previous list I just mention them here. You should check them. They are amazing. Also left out Mesarthim's CLG J02182–05102. It is good but could only find whole album video. Cryo Chamber is also still good. Didn’t include anything from them this time.

Cradle of Filth: Crawling King Chaos

I don’t actually like Cradle of Filth. I just pretend to because I want to wear their T-shirts. Okay. They are third on my all time most listened bands or artists list on LastFM. That is because I listened them much more few years back. This is first single/video from their upcoming album Existence is Futile. They still got it. Maybe I should start to listen them again.

A Place to Bury Strangers: Pinned

I found A Place to Bury Strangers when I binge watched guitar pedal videos. Oliver Ackermann is man behind guitar pedal company Death by Audio. A Place to Bury Strangers is quite tamed compared to Death by Audio’s promo material and pedals. That tells more about how out there Death by Audio is. A Place to Bury Strangers just released EP. This is their latest full length album from few years ago.

Snakes of Russia

I don’t pick any release from Snakes of Russia. They have only released singles and EPs so far. I got everything they have released on Bandcamp. Spitfire Audio released new Albion library Solstice. During launch stream Christian Henson mention Snakes of Russia was one inspirations behind the library. Had to check the band and ended up buying everything.

AMENRA: MASS VI

Amenra’s albums have been on my wish list for ages but when Bandcamp made spotlight post of them I got interested and finally bought their music. This is from their MASS period when they sang in English. I didn’t plan to have three black and white videos back to back. I had another video for this album but it had so much flashing lights I decided to use this one.

Ichiko Aoba: Windswept Adan

Ichiko Aoba also has Bandcamp spotlight post but I didn’t found her from that. It was one Facebook group where someone posted her music and link to that spotlight post.

KINOCO HOTEL: マリアンヌの密会

I have known Kinoco Hotel for some time now with name Kinoko Hotel. You can find their music with both names on iTunes. Someone posted this or another video of their latest album to previously mentioned Facebook group. Went to check if album was on iTunes and it was there.

Pizzicato Five: The Band of 20th Century: Nippon Columbia Years 1991-2001

Same Facebook group and same post as Kinoco Hotel. Someone mentioned in comments Kinoco Hotel reminded them of Pizzicato Five. Well… I had to check them too. Got this compilation album even though this doesn’t have my favorite song from them. Couldn’t find it from iTunes.

TsuShiMaMiRe: Mamire Mania 20

Same Facebook group. Different post. Probably close to same day. This is probably their mainstream song. I assume it to be their biggest hit since it was first song of this compilation album. Their other songs are bit more experimental and rougher.

ZZ Top: The Very Baddest of

I don’t pretend to be biggest ZZ Top fan of all time. I liked few of their biggest hits, was ok with their other songs and had one older greatest hits album. After Dusty Hill’s death I went to check their music. Got 40 song version of this compilation. It is solid compilation with many songs I haven’t heard before. I think this will give my ZZ Top fix from now on. This and Rough Boy are my favorite ZZ Top songs.

Music favorites of May 2021

It is that time of the month again. This month I had few albums I have hard time rating. I changed their rating few times. Some worked better first time and others after hearing them few times. I have those from time to time. On May I got more of those than usually. I almost didn’t buy any music from Japan. Last two records were from Japan. I will start from those.

Haru Nemuri: Seventh Heaven

Haru Nemuri has released so many singles lately next album should be released soon. Haven’t got earlier singles. I got this because I am not sure if this will be on next album. This is theme song for movie Colorless. So it is possible it will be only on soundtrack and on this single.

十四代目トイレの花子さん: 命日

What to say about 14th Generation Hanako-san of the Toilet? I have wanted to buy her music for some time but couldn’t found it anywhere. Until now. Her stage persona is based of Japanese urban legend. She is like those monsters who come when you do certain things. When I checked the album it sounded really good but novelty wore off quite quickly. This isn’t most monotonic hard core punk but album is bit too long to listen on one sitting. There is reason why genre’s albums are usually half hour long or something like that. This is about hour long. Songs work on their own better. Album have different version of this song. It was hard to find video. She hasn’t released too many videos and search return many videos of the urban legend.

All Them Witches: Nothing as the Ideal

Nothing as the Ideal is All Them Witches’ album from last year. It would have been on best albums of 2021 list if I had got it last year. Here it is. I probably don’t need to put every album of bands whose whole discography I am going to buy here. So I mention Murder by Death’s Who Will Survive, and What Will be Left of Them is also good album. Murder by Death’s video is on April’s list.

Paul Ruskay: Sword of the Stars 2 soundtrack

Paul Ruskay’s Homeworld soundtracks are among my favorite soundtracks. I wish they made new Homeworld game to have more of that music. I have played those games. Haven’t played Sword of the Stars 2. Bought this because of Paul Ruskay. This is almost as good as Homeworld soundtracks.

Derek Duke: Diablo 3 Reaper of Souls soundtrack

Found interesting article about Dark Souls games. I have their soundtracks on wishlist. As I have Bloodbourne’s soundtrack. No intention to play the games but I like the lore and visuals of the games. Went to check the soundtracks but ended up buying this one instead. This was more like what I was looking for. Have to check those soundtracks later again.

The Very Best of Arvo Pärt

That Dark Souls article name dropped few artists. Arvo Pärt was one of them. This is not the version which is on the album but Seven Magnificant Antiphonen is in it. This is first time I buy classical music album by one composer. I have few Classical Favorites albums before this. Have to check Arvo Pärt’s work more and try to find more composers like him.

The Black Keys: Delta Kream

I have The Black Key’s hit album. Had intention to buy more of their music but always forgot to do so. Someone shared this video on FB. It sounded so good I had to preorder the album. When it was released I wasn’t disappointed. Have check their other albums later.

Singularity: Place of Chains

This have been on my Bandcamp wishlist for ages. Bandcamp Fridays make me go through it and check these albums again. After getting this I put their other albums on wishlist and probably get one next Friday.

Zoe Boekbinder: Shadow

I have feeling Amanda Palmer has something to do why I know this Zoe Boekbinder. Either she has shared her music or this is recommendation based on liking Amanda Palmer’s music. This was put on wishlist long time ago. Should have got this earlier. I have started to like the album more after listening it more.

Cthulhu Dreamt: Cthulhu Dreamt

Don’t know much about this project. I think it is project. Album is concept album based on works of H.P. Lovecraft. I don’t know if there is connection to The Ocean (or The Ocean Collective). Album works best when it sounds like The Ocean and it sounds pretty close to The Ocean at times. It is like The Ocean without as solid vision.

God Body Disconnect: The Wandere’s Dream

I might have told here I like Cryo Chamber. I didn’t have their music in last list because that time they had not released anything amazing by their standards. That changed on April. I buy these albums on Bandcamp Friday. I get previous month’s releases then. God Body Disconnect is one of my favorite Cryo Chamber artists. The Wanderer’s dream didn’t disappoint.

Alphaxone & ProtoU: Back to Beyond

When two of my favorite Cryo Chamber artists make collaboration album it is highly likely I will like it. I like almost everything Cryo Chambers has released. Probably have bough everything they have released last two or three years.

Music favorites of April 2021

It is that time of the month again. Let’s start with album which isn’t released when I write this. But pre-orderers have got five songs in advance.

Gojira: Fortitude

Five songs are enough to tell Gojira hasn’t lost it. Album will have six more songs. Last time I saw Gojira live they played with borrowed equipment. I didn’t have problem with that show. They promised to come back to play with their own gear later. I guess that will happen 2022.

Sur Austru: Obârșie

I have got less new black metal since I cancelled Avantgarde Music’s subscription. I got too many not so inspiring albums from subscription. They still release really good music. Like Sur Austru’s latest album. Their previous album was one of my top favorites of year it was released. This could do the same. It made me reconsider re-subscribing Avangarde Music. It would be cheaper to get these good albums. I could just delete ones I don’t like that much.

All Them Witches: Atw

I don’t think I have mentioned All Them Witches before. They are bit like modern hard rock version of The Doors. This comes from someone who thinks The Doors is one of the greatest bands ever existed. Got this album this month. This is one of the bands I aim to get almost all albums they have released.

The Dead South: Sugar & Joy

When band’s music start to work it works. I had another The Dead South’s album in previous post. This month’s The Dead South album is Sugar & Joy. This doesn’t have as good songs as one which introduced me to the band. But I like the album as a whole.

The Devil Makes Three: Chains Are Broken

Same words different band. I have quite a few of The Devil Makes Three’s albums on wish list. I got this one this month.

Murder By Death: Red of Tooth and Claw

Ok. This month I got few albums from bands I have found lately and want more albums from. From Murder by Death I got this and Audiotree live EP. That EP is good starting point because it is quite cheap. If you don’t want buy it with out proper listening you can watch the gig in Youtube before buying.

Pale Waves: Who am I?

Pale Waves have released new music since I last checked them. Their previous album and EP had some killer songs. This one doesn’t have any such killers. At least none of the songs have grown on my like few of their previous songs but this is quite solid album.

Julia Kent: Green and Grey (Expanded)

This is second time I bought Green and Grey. I had regular version before. As I have all her other albums. Had to get extended version to get more songs like this one. Waiting for new music from her. Based on Instargram post she is practicing for live show(s). So there is hope. New music from another similar artist Zoe Keating would be nice too.

Den Sorte Død: Den Sorte Død

Starting to feel I put almost every album I bought here. I haven’t done so. I will put one after this one. I don’t know much about Den Sorte Død. Looks like Youtube doesn’t know much about them either. This was only song from the album I could find and I had problems playing the video. Hope you have better luck with it. This will have to do for dark cinematic ambience on this month’s list. Albums I got from Cryo Chamber during Bandcamp Friday are quite average on Cryo Chamber standards and I don’t want to put something from them on every post even if they deserve it.

カオスピピス: My Borderline

Didn’t get much Japanese music this month. This single was only one. I like the song but it looks like I don’t have to follow band further. Idol groups have tendency to try different styles before something sticks. This is first single and second single is something else. You get preview of it at the end of video. This isn’t first group I have liked until they changed their style.

Music favorites of March 2021

Let’s start with one I promised last time.

Necronomidol: Vämjelseriter

I have much more to say about this now than month ago. Couple weeks after album was released at least one member has left the band. One is not sure about leaving or staying. Third one is in hospital without certainty if she will be back. Necronomidol has lost at least two members soon after last two EPs or full length album releases. This release seem to continue the trend. Himari is only one who certainly continue. She was only one who continued last time when everyone else left. What comes to music this is their worst release since From Chaos Born. Since that EP their releases have had mostly really good songs. This has couple good ones, some of them are new versions of older songs. But there are too many fillers. Problem could be Necronomidol has become Himari and others instead of four or five equally important members. I expected more based on videos they released. Don’t know what to expect from them in future.

Lana Del Rey: Chemtrails over the Country Club

Chemtrails over the Country Club came out of the blue. We had to wait Lana Del Rey’s previous album for ages after first videos were released. I learned about this after it was released. I had not seen any videos before it. Had I seen the videos my expectations wouldn’t have been too high. I was bit hesitant to buy this because I didn’t like first video I checked but bought it because I liked her previous albums so much. I put this official audio video because this worked best first time I listened the album. Afterwards I have started to like album more. Even those songs which I didn’t like that much first time.

Carbon Based Lifeforms: ALT:01, ALT:02 and 20 Minutes

Bandcamp Friday findings. 20 Minutes was released just before Bandcamp Friday. I mean the extended version which lasts 20 minutes. ALT:01 and ALT:02 were released earlier. ALT albums contain alternative versions of previously released songs. This is my favorite song from albums.

Koldovstvo: Ни царя, ни бога

I haven’t got many black metal albums since I unsubscribed Avantgarde Music. Also I am not biggest fan of lofi black metal. Bought this because it felt it could start to work with more listening. And it did. It was last album I got from last Bandcamp Friday. It was recommended by another artist from Bandcamp. There is one black metal album waiting for next Bandcamp Friday and I probably should check what Avantgarde Music has released lately.

Crippled Black Phoenix: Champions Of Disturbance (a rough guide to CBP)

Crippled Black Phoenix has put at least couple albums out every Bandcamp Friday. This compilation was released last time. Got it even though I already had all the songs. If you don’t listen the band this is good place to start.

Chubby Wolf: The Darker Sex

I don’t remember if I have mentioned Chubby Wolf before. I have bought her music every now and then. There are quite a few album on Bandcamp but I have soon bought all of them. Recommend checking her music if you are into this kind of music.

Hilyard: Division Cycle

I think I promised this last time. Hilyard released other album On the Sorrow of Firn this year. It is so underground it didn’t have video on Youtube. This is from Cryo Chamber. Don’t know what more to say about them. I wish they had subscription. I buy everything they release anyway.

Murder By Death: Bitter Drink, Bitter Moon

I found Murder By Death when I searched similar bands to The Dead South and Devil Makes Three. This is not as country as those bands. Bitter Drink, Bitter Moon is their most popular album. Will be checking their other albums later.

Danko Jones: I Want Out

I Want Out is first single from upcoming Power Trio album. It felt like good video to end this list.
