There is new Dune movie coming. It was good time to release Dune graphic novel. Book 1 means in this case first part of comic books of Frank Herbert’s Dune book. It was originally released in three books. Comic will follow that. Next book won’t be Dune Messiah but middle part of Dune. This is meant to be definite comic book adaptation. Based on first book they are succeeding in it. They have so good team in place I hope they will continue to do all six of Frank Herbert’s Dune books.
If you know the story this book ends where you expect it to end. I have seen David Lynch’s Dune movie and listened audiobook couple time. Story was familiar but I picked something new from comic book format. First book is almost 200 pages long. It follows the book quite closely. Art aims to be realistic looking which is understandable when this is mean also for people who normally don’t read comics. My fear was it was going to be too generic but artists do good job making this beautiful and exciting. Art doesn’t borrow designs from Lynch’s or upcoming Villeneuve’s movies. It has its own look.
I read this when power at White House was changing. It made this feel incredible current considering all the conspiracy theories around transfer of power. House Harkonnen has left Arrakis and House Atreides is taking over what Harkonnen’s left. Bit like what is happening in United States at the moment. I have theory Frank Herbert knew Finnish guy named Härkönen he didn’t like that much. Härkönen is Finnish last name. Names are too similar to be coincidence.
Next book is coming spring 2022. It means third and last is probably coming 2023. I hope these will become so popular they continue to rest of the Dune books with same team after they have finished Dune.
