Editing What is Sport video

I really hope to find a way to make mountain biking footage to look good in Youtube. It seems to be hard for others too. Youtube compression doesn't seem to like lot of details moving fast. I could make video look ok after rendering by increasing kb/s but Youtube has its own settings. I could make it not look complete mess for most of the time but in some places it doesn't look too good. Those places tend have lot of shadow.

I would like to have more mountain biking footage on my channel but I need to figure out how to make it look better on Youtube. I have tried to have blur to have less details on frames but it hasn't worked too well. It helps little but I need something else too. I might be too critical about this. I have watched the video over many times looking for compression problems. Maybe that is why I see them so well.

I watched mountain biking world championships from Red Bull TV before editing the video. Women's race was really exciting till the end. I have to start watching more mountain biking. Too bad this season ended with world championships. I can see appeal of watching cycling videos from internet. I want to produce more cycling videos but I need to learn how to work the compression issues.

I have watched the video few times. I am not sure if I should have made video about this topic. I might be only one caring about what is sport. Inspiration was to find reason why bodybuilding is not a sport. That topic comes up every now and then. Probably more around time of Mr Olympia. This year's competition with in few weeks if it wasn't last weekend. Few bodybuilding fans may not like this if they happen to find it looking for information about Mr Olympia. Mr Olympia wasn't reason to make the video now. I just didn't have other good ideas at the moment. I have another ideas waiting for correct time which will be next three videos. I had to do a video before them.

Bikepacking inspiration

After riding fatbike for one hour and fourty minutes I end up watching Youtube and found few inspiring videos. One reason why I bought fatbike was bikepacking.  I don't have plans for trips but I find bikepacking interesting. After watching these I might have to plan something for next year.

Should I train two or three times a week?

I switched from training two times a week to training three times a week during my summer vacation. I trained twice a week for almost one and half year. Now I have been training three times a week for two months. It is mostly because cycling is fun and that fun won't last too much longer. We have had good weather but it is getting colder and evenings are getting darker. I started to think if I should get back to training twice a week.

You can see my recovery status of August from Polar Flow in picture above. My goal is to stay inside balanced. As you can see I go to strained often when I train three times a week. One reason for it is mountain biking. Mountain biking sessions are longer than other sessions and also harder. When I go to strained I am pretty tired all the time. I get back to balanced during weekends but I am too tired during them.

Training twice a week would make sense from that point of view. But training is still fun. I might keep do it three times a week because I am not going too much on strained. My main goal is to lose weight without it affecting my fitness. Two or three training sessions in a week doesn't matter too much for that goal. Training twice a week might even be better. It is easier to control what you eating when you train less.

If you have Polar Flow and heart rate monitor which gives recovery status in Flow you should keep checking it. Other brands and software have their own ways to measure your recovery. If you are motivated to train you tend to train too hard. You need to recover from your training to get better. If I compare today to day when I raced it is easier to see how you are recovered. Back then it was mostly your rest heart rate. Now you can find reliable estimates in your training software. Some can even help you estimate how to peak on competition date. Flow's recovery status can't do that but I am not planning to competing any time soon.

Summer 2018

Few words of last summer and what I did plus some drone footage. I bought DJI Mavic Air. Couldn't use it too much during summer because every place was full of people enjoying hot weather. It took this long to get some drone footage here.

Editing Summer 2018 video

Summer 2018 video is first video in long time I made new music for. It is also first video edited with DaVinci Resolve 15. But that is not all. It is also first video with drone footage. And first with new microphone. So there is lot of new. I will start with DaVinci Resolve 15.

I moved to DaVinci Resolve when 14 was released. It was first version which didn't require too much from computer. At some point I added Fusion to setup. Now it is included to Resolve. I can't comment on that because I didn't use it this time. Maybe next time. Resolve 15 was familiar to use and it had one minor improvement on one very frustrating feature of 14. I like to do cross fades. I do them as I edit. Problem with 14 was that these fades stayed with clips when I changed order of the clips. In 15 fades disappear when I move clips to new locations. I can't tell how much easier this made the editing.

Fairlight was unstable when you used VSTs. I learned to save often and stop playback when opening VSTs. I am not sure if it was fixed in this because I kept those habits. Now Fairlight has own effects. I will still use VSTs but it is nice to have those audio effects there in case you need them. I don't have reverb plugins on video editing computer. Having build in Reverb plugin is useful when you need something like that. I am not so sure how useful chorus effect is for dialog. I hope having own effects has made Fairlight more stable with other effects.

I bought DJI Mavic Air this summer. I have planned to buy drone for some time. DJI released Mavic 2 drones soon after I got my Mavic Air. I don't regret not waiting. I wanted small drone I can easily take with me. Mavic 2 drones are bigger than Mavic Air which is just small enough to go into big pockets. Batteries last about 15 minutes if you don't want to try your luck and run out of power when drone is in air. Fly more combo is the way to go. You need more than one battery.

You can expect more drone footage in future. I probably should have had all the video drone footage. I wanted to have one joke but it probably doesn't work as well as I wanted. I am not sure if difference between super sharp drone footage and mirrorless footage with small depth of field is as big to other as it is to me. Next time I know not to be too cinematic when combining other footage with drone footage.

Taiteiden Yö 2018

This was first time in year I didn't go to Taiteiden Yö with intention to shoot videos. Few years ago there were many events out doors to shoot. Last years there have been more events but almost everything has been indoors. I made this choice after trying to figure out what to shoot and finding only one which would work as video. Next year I probably just go there to enjoy the events and forget video and stills. This is what I got this year.
